Numbering Our Days – Making the Most of Our Time

These past few months, I’ve been hearing so much news about death—people I knew passing away. And just recently, I lost my mother. On top of that, calamities continue to claim lives unexpectedly. If we look around, it feels like there is no more encouragement to be found.

How do we carry on in the face of so much loss and discouragement?

1. The Brevity of Life

It’s becoming increasingly evident that our lives are fleeting. Just as James described it, life is like a vapor – short-lived and fragile. We are here today, gone tomorrow.

“Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.” James 4:14

2. Number Our Days

Death is constant and inevitable; we know this. Yet still, we are often caught off guard when it comes. This is why we are encouraged to number our days, to live with purpose – redeeming the time, and to align our time with eternity.

“So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.” Psalm 90:12

Lord, make me to know mine end, and the measure of my days, what it is: that I may know how frail I am. Behold, thou hast made my days as an handbreadth; and mine age is as nothing before thee: verily every man at his best state is altogether vanity.” Selah. Psalm 39:4–5

3. Salvation is for Today, not Tomorrow

Tomorrow is never guaranteed. What we do with the gift of now is what matters. If you are not yet sure of your eternal destiny, check it here – Are You Sure of Heaven?

“(For he saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succoured thee: behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.)” 2 Corinthians 6:2

4. Fear God and Keep His Commandments

Today’s world has drifted so far from God. Many take Him lightly, and truth has been twisted to serve man’s interests. But no matter how culture shifts or how sin is reformed to be acceptable, God’s Word and His standards do not change.

” Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.” Ecclesiastes 12:13

Life is still beautiful because it’s a gift from God. But this physical life is not forever. Eternity is real—either Heaven or Hell. And the choice is given to us now.
