For the last years, we were shaken by the uncertainty that Covid-19 has brought to the whole humanity. There were so many unanswered questions of fears and doubts as we had seen the days fell off during these two years. “Social distancing” and “new normal” were the words that we often hear amongst us. “Will everything be back to normal?” A question that until now, we keep on pondering.
Many things had happened and for sure, many of us have learned hard lessons that we would never learn should there be no pandemic.
Just recently, we heard the war between Ukraine and Russia. We saw on the news the glimpse of the devastation of wars to people. My heart cries for the children who are innocent but fall as victims of this evil world. Sometimes we wonder, “what about tomorrow?” “Will these kids be able to enjoy the beauty of life that is denied to them as such a young age?”
On the personal level, we had our own uncertainty. Fears of the unknown, uncertain times that make us doubtful about tomorrow, and our limited capacity to protect our own when we face those fears.
Amidst all of these, we are reminded that there is our God. No matter how unstable and uncertain this world is, God will remain the same. Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and for ever (Hebrews 13:8). Knowing this, we gain confidence and security because we have Him who will be with us in whatever circumstance that we will go through. We can trust His Word and be at rest despite the chaos.
How can we apply His Word so we can be peaceful during these uncertain times?
This led me to one of my favorite verses in Psalm, “My heart is fixed, O God, my heart is fixed: I will sing and give praise.” Our goal is to have our heart fixed before Him.
- Trust God because our understanding is limited. Whenever I have a hard time trusting God about certain situation or decision, I always flip my Bible to Proverbs 3:5 “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.” Many times, I have my own understanding about many things. Yet God constantly reminding me that my knowledge is limited. My vision is short-sighted. Like what we are experiencing, if we don’t learn to trust the Lord, we will fall into the trap of depression, grumbling, and anxiety. He knows that there are times when we feel that we know more or understand all but as human, we have finite mind.
2. Trust God because He works in our behalf. Whenever we are unsure of what the future will be, when we figure what is ahead, we seek God. We delight in Him, so He will make our path establish.
Delight thyself also in the Lord: and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.
Commit thy way unto the Lord; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.
And he shall bring forth thy righteousness as the light, and thy judgment as the noonday.
Two things we must consider: delighting ourselves in the Lord and committing our way unto Him. Then He shall bring it into pass.
3. Trust God and be still. It is a struggle to be still when we have the means or when we don’t have either. It is our nature to help God or go ahead of Him when uncertainties come. Our minds are forced to think of ways and we end up strategizing and making our own plans instead of being still. Stillness is a discipline that we must learn.
“Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.” Psalm 46:10
4. Trust God’s provision. Most often than not, we worry and become anxiousabout physical things.
“Where will I get my budget for next week?”
“What are we going to eat next month?”
“How can we pay our bills?”
“What will happen tomorrow if I don’t save?’
These questions linger and these are valid. However, for us being consumed thinking about these is not fruitful. It leads to worry and distrust to God’s ability to provide. These are reality. So as our God. He will not permit a righteous begs for bread (Psalm 37:25).
“Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?” Matthew 6:25
As we see from the stories in the Bible, God never forgot those who trusted in Him. There’s David, Joseph, the Zarephath woman, Mordecai, Paul, and so many others. Tomorrow might look like scary and blurry, don’t forget that we have a big God.
